Why specialized consulting firms matter when enterprise projects are on the line.
There’s a reason military commanders deploy Special Forces.
It’s not because they have more personnel, bigger budgets, or greater resources than conventional military units.
It’s because certain missions demand something different.
Precision. Experience. Adaptability. Decisive leadership. And the ability to operate effectively under tremendous pressure.
Special Forces aren’t deployed to replace an entire military force. They’re deployed to accomplish critical objectives where specialized capabilities can change the outcome of a battle.
I’ve often thought about how closely that philosophy resembles what we do at 365 Digital Technologies.
And it explains why smaller, specialized consulting firms can compete successfully against organizations many times their size.
Bigger Doesn’t Always Mean Better
When organizations embark on major ERP implementations, enterprise transformations, or technology modernization initiatives, there’s often a natural tendency to engage the largest consulting firms.
The assumption is understandable.
Bigger firms have more resources, larger teams, global reach, and recognizable brands.
And there are certainly situations where those capabilities are essential.
But here’s a question executives should consider:
When your $20 million transformation starts falling apart, do you need another 50 consultants, or do you need five people who know exactly how to regain control?
Those are two very different solutions.
And the answer could determine whether your organization recovers or continues spending money without making meaningful progress.
The Special Forces Approach to Enterprise Consulting
At 365 Digital Technologies, we don’t measure our capabilities by how many consultants we can place on a project.
We measure them by the experience, judgment, and results those consultants bring.
Our approach is built around five principles.
1. Experience Over Headcount
When an ERP implementation is struggling, adding more people doesn’t automatically solve the problem.
Sometimes it makes things worse.
More meetings. More communication channels. More competing opinions. More confusion over accountability.
What struggling programs often need is experienced leadership capable of identifying the underlying problems, prioritizing corrective actions, and restoring execution discipline.
2. Precision Over Activity
A large team can produce hundreds of deliverables and still fail to move the project forward.
Status reports, dashboards, meetings, and presentations are valuable only when they support meaningful decisions.
We focus on the critical issues affecting delivery.
What’s preventing progress? Who owns the decision? What’s the business impact? What needs to happen next?
Activity isn’t the same as progress.
3. Agility Over Bureaucracy
In a project recovery, time matters.
Organizations cannot always afford weeks of internal escalations before someone makes a decision.
Smaller, experienced consulting teams can often move faster because the people making recommendations are the same people directly engaged in the work.
Fewer layers. Faster decisions. Clearer accountability.
4. Mission Success Over Resource Utilization
There’s an important difference between building a consulting engagement around staffing requirements and building one around client outcomes.
Our objective isn’t to keep as many consultants assigned as possible.
It’s to help the client accomplish the mission.
Sometimes that means leading an entire enterprise initiative.
Other times, it means deploying a small team to stabilize a failing program, establish governance, rebuild stakeholder confidence, or provide independent oversight of a systems integrator.
The size of the engagement should be driven by the problem being solved.
5. Leadership in the Trenches
One of the greatest advantages a specialized consulting firm can offer is direct access to experienced leadership.
Our clients aren’t simply purchasing a methodology or a recognizable brand.
They’re engaging professionals who have managed difficult implementations, challenged unrealistic expectations, navigated executive disagreements, and helped organizations recover when things didn’t go according to plan.
And when difficult decisions need to be made, our leadership is close to the work.
We Don’t Have to Replace the Army to Change the Outcome
Here’s something that often gets misunderstood about smaller consulting firms.
We don’t necessarily need to replace the large systems integrator.
In fact, many of our engagements involve working alongside major implementation partners.
The integrator may have hundreds of resources supporting configuration, development, testing, and deployment.
But the client still needs independent leadership.
Someone protecting the business case.
Someone challenging assumptions.
Someone ensuring governance is working.
Someone willing to tell executive leadership what they need to hear, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Sometimes the most valuable team in the room isn’t the largest team. It’s the team willing and able to take control of the critical issues.
That’s where specialized firms can make an extraordinary difference.
The Real Question Executives Should Ask
When selecting consulting partners, executives often begin with questions about company size, annual revenue, global reach, and resource capacity.
Those are legitimate considerations.
But I would encourage them to ask a few additional questions.
- Who will actually lead my project?
- Have these individuals successfully navigated situations like ours?
- How quickly can they identify and address serious problems?
- Will they challenge our decisions when necessary?
- Are they accountable for outcomes or simply contracted activities?
- When things go wrong, will experienced leadership be directly involved?
The answers often reveal more about a firm’s ability to deliver than the number of employees listed on its website.
Small Team. Critical Mission. Big Results.
At 365 Digital Technologies, we recognize that we aren’t the largest consulting firm in the market.
We don’t pretend to be.
And we don’t need to be.
We’ve built our company around experienced professionals who understand enterprise project management, ERP implementations, organizational transformation, and project recovery.
We believe clients deserve senior-level expertise, direct accountability, and a consulting partner that treats their success as the mission.
We also recognize that large consulting firms bring important capabilities to complex programs. Our value isn’t defined by being against them. It’s defined by knowing when and how our specialized expertise can make the greatest difference.
You don’t always need a bigger army to win the battle in front of you.
Sometimes you need the right team, with the right experience, at precisely the right moment.
That’s the role we strive to fulfill at 365 Digital Technologies.
And that’s why our size isn’t a limitation.
It’s part of our advantage.
